Day 5/151

by

“Persistence guarantees that results are inevitable.”–Paramahansa Yoganada

I went to yoga this morning and stayed after to work on my handstand. First I practiced floating — always getting better– then I went to the wall. I started in Downdog with my feet against the wall, putting weight into my hands and then shifting forward. I’ve been doing that for a long time but am now able to get both feet away from the wall for a few seconds. Success!

I turned around to face the wall and try the tips from Shana Meyerson and when I looked to my left Chrissie had joined me. I laughed and said, “Are you making fun of me?” She said no because she was also working on her handstand. I shared some of the things I’ve been working on and then had her watch while I slowly lowered one leg and then the other. She said one of my legs was almost parallel! Whoop! Whoop! Tomorrow is a day off from handstand (even though my mind will tell me to try it anyway) and then I’ll be back at it.

Yesterday I shared my handstand story with my Copywriting students. A few of them looked at me like I was crazy. I suppose it does seem kind of goofy for a 55-year-old woman to care about doing a handstand. But I think at 55, it’s even more important to work on handstands now than when I was younger (although I do wish that I had been doing handstands in my youth). If I have the strength and the tenacity, why wouldn’t I want to keep advancing and challenging myself as long as it’s physically possible? I’m not ready to say, “I’m done. This is it.” And even if I do give up on handstand and decide it’s never going to happen for me, I’ll simply pick something else to work on. Because I can.
