Sledding in the sun — Fun at White Sands National Park!

by

This national park boasts the world’s largest gypsum dune field, with 275 miles of white sand that looks like snow!❄️

Here’s the thing — this sand isn’t like beach sand — it’s extremely fine, and cool to the touch, so you can walk around barefoot 🦶and sled down the dunes! 🛷

(BTW watch my video on IG and TikTok to see me toppling on the way down a dune! 😂)

Tips:

  1. Sledding really is fun once you get the hang of it — look for steep slopes! 👀 (Sled rental available at the visitor center.)
  2. Wear a hat and sunscreen, bring water, and hand sanitizer — several of the bathrooms were out.
  3. Unlike other National parks, you don’t need a lot of time to do/see everything. We originally thought it would be an all-day activity, but 2-3 hours would have sufficed.

Note about shoes: my husband wore hiking boots and I wore my Saguaro shoes — they both got sand in them, but the sand is so powdery it’s not noticeable and pours out easily! 💁‍♀️
